As the group teleports into Esmardin's Estate they arrive on the second floor and are immediately confronted by a Taran Royal guard who they intimidate into backing down so they dont have to fight him. They proceed to the common room where they find Esmardin Blackwell (the current overseer), Stalmin Klim (who they thought they killed in the Slave Lords stronghold), and Ajaru, the lesser slave lord that escaped them on the docks at the Slave Lords stronghold. Unbelieving that Stalmin survived the party jumps into action. When the battle starts Stalmin unleashes a lightning bolt at the party (an unusual spell for a Priest of Orcus), and Esmardin and Ajaru engage the party. Esmardin falls quickly to the blades of the party and "Stalmin's" illusion fails and they realize this is the same slave lord illusionist they have fought several times. He again uses his illusion magic to make his escape as Esmardin's head explodes and a tiny brainlike creature emerges assaulting the party. At the same moment an Illithid emerges from a side room along with several elite drow warriors. A combination of super charged lightning bolts from Maelin's Staff of Power, Darius and Kromm's sword and morning star assaults, and Lucan in Giant Scorpion form slay all except the Mind Flayer.

After several waves of mental blasts from the Illithid (Mind Flayer - named Klorthaxus) the party rallies to destroy the abomination. After being severely wounded it teleports away the battle won for the party and for Taran.

They later find out that when the lesser slave lords Wimpel Frump (illusionist) and Mistress Ajaru arrived at Taran Whimpel had a brazen plan. He would use his illusionary magic to appear as Stalman Klim and take over the slave lords operations. He told Esmardin that the other slave lords betrayed him and he slew them all. Ajaru posed as Stalman’s personal body guard as part of the ruse.

Conclusion:

As Talgren was policing the bodies in the room he discovered two things. First that there were two small chests that were destroyed by Maelin's lightning bolt that contained the shattered and crispy bodies of two more Intellect Devourers. Apparently these were intended for the slave lords but the group stopped that from happening. Second, he discovered some coded documents that they have not been able to decipher.

After they poisoned the well at the Temple of Ixion enough inquisitors died pretty spectacular deaths that the remaining few fled and their Slaadi allies returned the Abyss with no one left around to pay them. The remaining few Wizards and worshipers of Ixion took back the temple (now led by Thaluud, the reincarnated Orc Arch Wizard) and now are allied with what appears to be the new leader and newly elected Overseer, Aedemious Case, son of Onarion Case. He is the man they saved from torture from the Chain Devils. For the first time in many years the free peoples of Taran are enjoying a life without the iron grip of an oppressor or the economic grip of the Merchant Princes.

Gerarda, the Inn Keeper of Singer Travelling Inn told party that Sildar Halwinter wanted the group to become the new leaders of the Grey Alliance and work behind the scenes to keep the city safe and she will pass along names and contacts to assist them in this new responsibility if they take it.

After months of deciphering the documents (with the assistance of Thaluud) they find out that out they refer to an underdark drow city called Liurth Dreir, where an army is being rallied to attack the surface world. The armies are rallying under House Nezznar led by Edinara (mother of Edralve) and House Druu'Giir led by Raltar Druu'Giir. Apparently, House Nezznar planned to take over the slave lords and Taran and use it as a staging point to attack and enslave the populace of the Northern Territories. In-fighting among the two Drow Houses were stagnating the invasion and Edinara hoped that having the armies of Taran and the Slave Lords under her influence would keep House Druu'Riir in place and allow the invasion to start. It seems though that the party's involvement has stopped those machinations and they probably have stalled their advanced for the time being. They do find a map to the underdark and secret ways to reach Lilth Dreir that will undoubtedly be guarded. Once again the city of Taran is under threat from enemies, this time from deep in the dark reaches of the underdark.

Will the party take up the mantle as leaders of the Grey Alliance? Has the threat from the underdark been stopped? Is Raltar Druu'Riir really Talgren's Drow father and what does this mean for him? Why is an Illithid (mind flayer) working for the Drow? Does Edralve still have the Nezznar Spider Staff and why was she so intent on getting it back that she abandoned her plans to take over the Slave Lords and jeopardize the invasion plans?

Prologue of Gods Among Us, the second installment of The Kyngdoms Campaign.

Taran is only now staring to recover from the occupation of the Slave Lords and their allies. Thousands died in the fighting following the death of the Overseer and his apparent alliances with the Slaver Lords and the Drow. The hardest hit area was the harbour district and even months after the battles waged there the hulks of sunken warships still litter the harbour.

Ademious Case rallied the remnants his father’s troops to him and many of the other houses and with their combined might they killed or drove off the occupying forces. This thrust him into role of leader and the people have turned to him to guide the city. He was reluctant at first but he has since embraced the role and the city has proclaimed him the first King of Taran. His first order of business was to disband the Merchant Princes council and take control of the city from them. He is a soldier first and a king second and this has caused many problems for him. In the past few months when remnants of the Merchant Princes loyal forces started moving against him he has responded swiftly and terribly and many were slaughtered. He has since reigned in his forces realizing that if he is going to rule he can’t destroy the city in the process.

In an attempt to appease the people he has banned any secret societies/police in the city to include the Grey Alliance and the Order of Ixion. The Order has agreed with this and they have been openly working with the King and their oppression of religion and wizards in the city is at an end. In fact, Ademious has offered to assist financially and politically any nonviolent religious orders who wish to build temples in the city. Currently only the following three religious orders have been backed and temples to them have started construction: Aruthane - the goddess of Agriculture, harvest and fertility, Fandor - the Greater God of Justice, Protection and Peace, and Olgden – the demigod of crafts, commerce and community. All of these gods were worshipped secretly in the past but now that the Order of Ixion’s Inquisitors have fled the city these gods are now openly worshipped and the city seems to be prospering and in good spirits as a result.

The king has been making public speeches at Inns, market places, craft halls, and festivals and making himself very accessible to the public (too accessible some may say). During his speeches he is promoting reunification of the Northern Territories into a single kingdom once again. He has sent envoys to the neighboring cities offering lucrative trade compacts and offers of military aid in times of need if they agree to meet to discuss the reunification. This has had mixed responses as many are still suspicious of the new king and fear one despot might have been replaced with a new one. There are also whispers of the threat of the Drow in the streets and whether or not this threat is real only those in the know seem to have the answer to that. The future of Taran is brighter but may be dulled if heroes dont step up and combat those who put the cities inhabitants to the blade or in chains.

To the East in the ruins of the Baronry of Barocia a patrol of Taranian Rangers scout the area for trouble.

"Sir, why are we so far East? We are a weeks travel from Taran?" says one of the younger rangers. Aldos turns his weather beaten scarred face towards the recruit and says "Because the king wants us to investigate a missing caravan from Thryn. They are one of the cities who havent agreed to attend the conference to discuss reunification and if he can show them that Taran is sincere by providing aid then when they dont ask for it then maybe they will change their mind." At that he cuffs the recruit across the back of his rain soaked cloak hood. "And because I gave you a damn order. Now take point and stop asking so many damned annoying questions." The recruit sullenly rides forward trying to remember his training and doing his best not to look scared even those he was.

As the small band of 4 approach the edges of the Barony of Barocia each of them bearing heavy brown leather cloaks pulled tight against wind and rain, short swords at their belt and longbows on their backs they spot the remnants of the caravan. Aldos gives a signal and they all dismount with bows in hand in an Echelon formation with Aldos on point. As they approach the wreckage there isn't much left and no bodies can be found. As they fan out one of the Rangers calls to Aldos and he points to light footprints in the mud, definitely humanoid but not heavily armored based on the depth of the tracks. They also see large rends in the ground that appear near the tracks but dont know what to make of it. Aldos quietly approaches the recruit and says "Eli, stay here and watch the horses we will follow the tracks and be back soon, stay sharp." Eli nods nervously in response and Aldos puts a reassuring hand on his shoulder.

Aldos and his men quietly follow the tracks as dusk approaches and soon they find themselves in the Barocia burial barrows. Smallish hills dot the landscape and contain the tombs of the Barocian nobility. They look at each other with uneasy glances and continue to follow the tracks to one of the larger barrows. There they see a large brass inlaid stone door of the tomb depicting the Baron and his family. Long ago succumbed to weather and age the images of the baron and his family are barely recognizable. But something is off. The door to the tomb is slightly agar, undoubtedly left open by tomb robbers but tracks lead straight in. As Aldos is about to order the Rangers back to the horses his face is splashed with the blood of his second as a small black crossbow bolt, only the fetching showing, is buried in his eye. The Ranger falls to the ground killed instantly as several black shapes move out of the barrow in the days fading light. Aldos yells "RUN" to the remaining Ranger and they race back towards the horses.

As Eli nervously grooms his mount he thinks he hears voices coming towards him and he instantly mounts his horse bow in hand. As he pears through the gloom he sees Aldos running towards him alone and hears him yell "RIDE, Eli, RIDE." Before Eli can react an incredibly massive form emerges from the darkness behind Aldos. At first he thinks its a trick but the monstrosity is over 15 feet tall and just as wide and is moving at an impossible speed. As he turns his horse to flee he takes a fleeting glance back to see two massive claws grab Aldos and tear him in half as someone would tear a hunk of bread off of a freshly backed loaf.

As dawn unveiled the city of Taran the tall towers of the Abbey of Fandor (still under construction) catch the early morning light, almost by design, and cast shadows over the ostentatious structure of the abbey. Flying buttresses hold the structure in place as the spires reach for the sky. A lone figure stands before the abbey dressed in simple off-white robes with a sash of gold and red holding his robes closed. He stands there his arms crossed in silent contemplation as he lets the morning sun warm his chilled bones. A moment later an armored figure adorned in magnificent platemail, carrying a matching great helm at his side near the hilt of an equally exquisite longsword with sweeping silver lines and stylized wings for a hilt. The priest ponders to himself "that must be the famous longsword "Horde Breaker" which gained its infamy from the goblin wars against Grogsnot the Merciless and what a history that blade has seen". As the armor clad figure draws closer Jarrus sees the warriors eyes and takes a step back reflexively. It wasnt the half-orc visage that startled him it was the fierceness he saw those eyes. In fact this was Kromm Mudblood Paladin of Mynax. Jarrus Yarmord, the Honorably Magistrate Divine, smiles to himself and thinks "now here is the type of hero our church needs."

After a short but productive meeting with Kromm, Jarus starts looking over the paperwork and the massive bag of gold and magical items that Kromm had donated to him. He had told Kromm that he intended to build a sister church to Fandor for his god Mynax and that he wanted Kromm's support. Without flinching Kromm had deposited thousands of gold pieces on his desk with the promise of more. With this gold and Kromm's support he knew he would get the permits to start the Mynax temple immediately. He also knew the perfect priest to head that arm of the church. It was a good day. Hopefully Kromm wouldnt get himself killed protecting the free peoples before he could see the glory of Abby of Fandor and the Fortress of Mynax side by side bringing glory and peace to the people.

In another temple Maelin High Warlock of Ixion sits and talks with the Archmage of Ixion, Thaluud. Thaluud tells him that he had a vision from Ixion and that Ixion wants him to find some to destroy the mortal husk of Ixion's body that is stored beneath the Order's temple. He says that he does not want it to be the instrument of any more destruction in his name. Thaluud tells him that he has tried many spells of power but nothing seems to hold enough power to destroy the celestial beings body. At that they both look at the staff that Maelin tightly clutches in his hand, the Staff of Power. No other weapon can invoke as much power as the staff when it is sundered but this usually kills the wielder. They discuss for days ways to protect Maelin should he decide to do this they find a long lost spell that they both believe should shield him from the blast long enough to transport away unharmed. They prepare the spell at the alter of Ixion as Maelin stares in disbelief at the dead gods carcass, nearly 100 feet long lying on a slab of white marble. He looks at the staff and laments but he owes his life and possibly his soul to Ixion. As Thaluud starts chanting Maelin looks nervously at him as he stands on Ixion's body ready to break the staff releasing all of its power. With a nod Thaluud finishes the spell and points his hand to Maelin as he sunders the staff of power by force of will alone. Shock falls over Thaluud's face as Maelin realizes the spell failed but its too late and the power of the staff is unleashed.

After the terrible pain subsides Maelin looks around and sees that has been transported somewhere but he is not sure where. The landscape is bleak all around grey plains dotted with jagged rocks protruding from the ground which writhe with massive larvae worms with the faces of humanoids on them. Not far away two massive red and black furred bipedal creatures seem to be harvesting the wormlike creatures their screams heard over the murmuring of the other damned larvae. As he looks around he realizes he is on the edge of cliff that descents into darkness. From the darkness emerge two flying flaming black stallions being ridden by two black skinned women with long green hair and red eyes. As they fly towards him all he can do is stand and stare at the horror around him. Then suddenly the ground shakes beneath his feet and soon he sees two massive feet clad in simple sandals on either side of him. As he looks up he sees a 100 ft being of celestial power and immediately knows its Ixion who is clad in simple white robes trimmed in gold. Ixion extends his hand and whitish yellow energy lances out towards the riders and they are vaporized, mounts and all. The mass of larvae instinctively slither away and the large creatures harvesting them break and run. Ixion bends down towards Maelin who has stumbled back from the god and smiles slightly and says "you have done well, now return and spread my word." At that he sweeps his hand down and flicks Maelin with his finger all the while laughing and sends Maeling spiraling back through the planes of existence to Arrasia and Taran. He gets to his feet in the smoking ruins of the cavern that once held Ixions fallen mortal form and sees a set of robes at this feet and knows them by name "The Robes of Malficus".

A few weeks later the party is summoned by King Aedemious Case and is related the tale of the Ranger Eli and his encounter with the Drow. Putting two and two together and looking at the decrypted map they recovered they realize that the burial mounds of Barocia are the entrance the Drow intended to use to lead their invasion of the surface world. They agree to form a strike force and delve into the World Below and try and stop the invasion if they can. Knowing nothing about the World Below they scour the city for books on it. They find nothing of note except a wandering Deep Gnome named Slanter Rivenstone who tells them that the entrance they seek is very close to a Drow Outpost called Szith Morcane which guards the way to Liurth Dreir. He agrees to guide them through the World Below if they agree to help him recover the spellbook of the former master of Szith Morcane, the archwizard Solom Ned'razak. He was reputably cast out and left his spellbook behind hidden somewhere in the stronghold. The party agrees and sets out on the path to the Drow city of Lilth Dreir in hopes that they can somehow once and for all stop the invasion. After battling a roving bands of Frost Giants on the road who were hunting down an escaped Hill Giant slave they find themselves at the barrows of the once great Barony of Barocia.

TBC....Descent into the World Below.

This again will be a short recap to bring everyone up to speed.

As the party continued their journey westward towards the fallen Barony of Borocia. They find the remnants of the last standing city of the Barony, lost to time, and locate the barrows. There are two buildings intact and a large ornate brass door that leads into the barrows proper. Inside one of the buildings they find nothing but looted tombs but the second one is still sealed and as they attempt to open it a swarm of rats appears all over the building and one of the rats speaks to Maelin and warns about desecrating the tomb. Maelin and the party debate this as Kromm senses an incredibly powerful undead presence from the rats. They talk Kromm down and proceed into the barrows. Within they find the bodies of slain Drow and strange marks on the floor, ceiling and walls of the crypt. They proceed cautiously but trip an ancient magical trap and two monstrous fiendish Winter Wolves appear and lay into the party. Much of the party is critically wounded but Slanter is able to magically imprison one while they defeat the other and they manage to defeat the summoned creatures and investigate the tomb that the creatures were guarding. Inside they find an untouched sarcophagus and inside are the remains of an ancient warrior bearing a magical double headed spear where the tips are fashioned to resemble lightning bolts. They rest and continue deeper into the tomb and find themselves in an un-worked cavern that leads deeper underground. Slanter is sure this is the way to the entrance to the World Below and the path to Szith Morcane. As they reach the end of the passageway they see a hole in cavern floor and investigate only to encounter a 15 foot tall and wide demonic looking spider like creature. The creature has webs like razor wire and lays into the party but fast thinking and quick blades fell the creature. As they continue to investigate the hole they are ambushed by a Drow raiding party whose leader is wearing a tabard of black with a turned down white withered hand adorned with silver rings. They later identify this as the symbol of Kiransalee, the Drow goddess of Death and Undead. They pass down the hole and start their several month journey to Lilth Dreir.

After weeks of travel and narrowly escaping the maw of a Purple Worm, Vampiric Mist, and getting lost many times they finally find the outpost of Szith Morcane which blocks their passage of their journey to Lilth Dreir. House Morcane has held this outpost for a thousand years but they soon find out that it is now being held by worshipers of Kiransalee. Their journey starts with a battle with more Kiransalee worshiping Drow and two creatures of horror that they have never seen before. They look to be flayed Drow with no skin and just muscle tissue and hideous claws that drip acid. Thanks to the strength of Kromm's Paladinhood they are able to resist running in terror from the horrors. They best the drow and Quth-Maren and find themselves on the edge of windy cliff the sound of rushing water below. About 40 feet across they see the other side and a small ledge with another passage leading onward. The cavern is filled with massive webbing that seems to be large enough and strong enough to walk on. As they make their way across the cavern, Escott loses his balance and falls deeper into the rift, desperately trying to grab the spidery ropes and falls hard into a fast moving underground river. As he hits he shatters his shoulder and right arm and is pulled downstream unable to catch his breath and escape the river. He shortly is flung from river over a 100 foot waterfall into a dark lake and is never heard from again.

As they see they comrade fall to his death the party is attacked by a gargantuan fiendish spider can barely gets its bloated body up the cliff wall. The titanic battle ends with the pcs victorious but almost at the loss of their Paladin Kromm. As they cross the webbing and make their way down the tunnel on the far side they emerge into the largest cavern they have seen. A faint green phosphorescence dances along the ceiling, which is 30 feet high at the entrance and rises sharply to over 100 feet high. The cavern stretches for over 1500 feet to the east, its floor broken into a myriad of ledges and titled slabs. Many of these are covered with weird fungal growths that appear to have been cultivated; others sport bulbous houses or cottages that seem to have been grown from giant toadstools. Eerie green witchlight dances in the small, round windows of these dwellings. A few dark figures move about the fungus patches and the houses.

Talgren scouts up a tunnel winding up to their right and finds an odd market place. This huge natural cavern seems overlarge for the single clump of creatures gathered near the southeast wall. Two lizards loaded down with packs and crates stand at the center of the clump. 3 Grey Dwarves beside them seem to be selling wares from the lizard's packs. The customers include Drow, a trio of Kuo-toas, and a Mind Flayer with a Duergar bodyguard. They battle the group the Duergar bodyguard attacks the Mind Flayer and the other Drow and Duergar. The group finally finds their first ally in the World Below. His name is Dorn and he explains that he is a bounty hunter and was captured and enslaved by the Mind Flayer but had finally thrown off the creatures influence and was looking for the change to escape when the surface dwellers (the pcs) attacked. He vows to aid them in the quest for freeing him. They take some of the captured supply lizards and use as part of a disguise (disguise self spells to aid them) to appear as merchants/slavers and move through the common areas of Szith Morcane. They manage to make it all the way through to far side but at the massive gate guarding the exit to Szith Morcane they are confronted a high priestess Drow who sees through their deception and a battle ensues with Elite Drow warriors, the high priestess, Quth-Maren, and a summoned demon. After another pitched battle where most of the players feared certain death they win and pass through the gates to tunnel beyond. It is here that Slanter reminds them that they havent paid their debt as he points back to the Inverted Tower and the possible location of the Drow Archwizards spellbook they promised him. After some negotiations they give him an amulet of proof against poison and bids them good luck casting a wary eye to the Duergar and in his head he thinks this will be the last time he sees the surface dwellers.

A days walk out of Szith Morcane the party finds a small cave to rest for the night. They are awoken by an assault team of Drow from Szith Morcane consisting of 4 Elite Drow warriors, a Drow Assassain, a Revenant of the Drow High Priestess they slew. She goes directly for Talgren since he had the killing blow on her and he manages to kite her around the cave while the group finished off the rest of the assault force and put her down as well. On the Assassin they find a pouch with 2 small dark severed fingers and one is adorned with signet ring that they recognize as belonging to Slanter. They decide that although Slanter is a crotchety old gnome he doesnt deserve to die at the hands of the Drow and they are ones who convinced him to come down here and technically they didnt give him the payment they promised so they go back to Szith Morcane to save their friend. Dorn tells them that if they are torturing him he will most likely be in the main House Morcane complex in one of the caves in the northern part of the commons.

There was a funny moment that happened when we were doing this adventure. I had told them ahead of time that is can be a grindy dungeon crawl and asked them if they were OK with that and if not I could find ways to alleviate some of the dungeons. They all emphatically said no we want to do it all so I prepared all of it and in the previous session I detailed above they totally bypassed most of Szith Morcane. After the session was over I asked them why did they skip all of my prepared dungeon and all they could say was "we forgot we said that." *Face Palm* So I added in that last part about Slanter to convince them to go back.

Now the Adventure continues....

So the party returns to Szith Morcane to rescue their ally Slanter. They come up with the idea of the druid shapechanging into an Earth Elemental and carrying them one by one through the earth to bypass the cities defenses. This works, sort of, as each passenger is assaulted by rock and debris and the Druid in this form, unaccustomed, to the earth elemental's strength almost crushes several party members to death. In the end they manage to get inside of the city undetected and make for the House Morcane abode, a squat stone structure that housed the prominent house members with a fane of Lloth sitting atop the structure like a massive onyx spider and acting as the main temple of the Drow. As they enter the main entrance way the far portion of the chamber curved in an octagonal shape. Two passages led out of the room through crafted archways, and a narrow tunnel seemed to form an exit in the ceiling. A ladder that strongly resembled a spiderweb led up to the tunnel mouth. Standing guard were 4 Quth-Maren, the skinned drow and now undead minions of Kiransalee. As the fight starts 2 noble Drow Vampire Spawn join the fray. After defeating the sentries they find a tortured female drow and she agrees to lead them to the matron mother's chambers. After a battle with a pair of driders the group enters the room of the matron's mothers concubine, Ektandar the Anti-Paladin and his pet advanced displacer beast "Ripper". The fight was quick as the Anti-Paladin and Kromm stood toe to toe against each other smiting and criticaling each other both almost one shotted. After the battle the party debates on whether to retreat to rest of continue on and they decided to continue to the matron mother's chamber.

As the group approaches the inner sanctum of the temple they are confronted with an ornate wooden door that has been marred and cut and burned to deface the likeness of Llolth. Talgren approaches the door to see if he can hear anything and a magical rune of warding flares and bolts of acidic lightning bolts lance out and strike all the party members for terrible damage. Beyond the door the ceiling of the octagonal room rose 30 feet off the ground, and a pillar in the center stood full half that height. On the pillar they could see a throne made of bones, with a gaunt drow woman draped casually across it and she hisses and them with fanged teeth. The walls of the room were covered with majestic dark tapestries, and several long tables of gleaming black wood lined the walls. Lying on one of the tables they see an unconscious Slanter and Darius gets to him and carries him out of the room.

As the party engages Matron Mother Dorina T'sarran she casually waves a hand and 4 shadows appear and attack the party. Darius feebly tries to climb the column to get to the matron mother while ignoring the cries of Lucan who proclaims its an illusion and that the priestess is inside the pillar. Other members of the party cannot see through the illusion and the fight continues on as Lucan changes into an Earth Elemental and starts to assault the vampire matron mother. She surrounds herself in a blade barrier and grapples Krom holding him in the blades. Krom finally manages to break free right before the blades tear him apart and they fell the matron mother with much effort. They search the room and find a secret door at the far end of the room and find Slanters gear and a sealed sarcophagus and attempt to open it when yet another rune even more powerful that the first ignites and a Symbol of Death appears almost slaying most of the party except for the quick thinking of Talgren who closes the secret door after the party gets out to block the symbols power.
