The party press on in a pressured tunnel, the city streets become jagged and wrecked, the once beautiful cobble stone is now buried in moss, mold, and rubble. The way starts to ascend, a promising sign! However, Fizz and Lia warn the others of the sounds of battle echoing ahead. Lia suggests to avoid the battles ahead, she is concerned for the groups survival. Siberius seems clueless of the danger but is excited to meet everything with artful combat. Fizz however had a balance of both opinions, and offered to scout ahead with Emer.
The way is littered with bloody bodies of sahuagin and skum alike. They seems to be at war with each other, but no knows why. It does not matter, what matters is to get out alive with each other and the other 20 prisoners.
The caverns appear to be more like a maze, with many turns to take. The party discovered an underwater passage leading deeper into the sunken city, which was also a warzone. It was here Emer and Fizz swim deep to witness senseless bloodshed. The sahuagin ride shark mounts to battle! The two adventurers swim into the window of a tower, they find more sea elven lanterns, but also encounter battle worn sahuagin! It was a struggle underwater, using small weapons, and Fizz his trident! As Emer was losing breath, Fizz did not hesitate to "kiss" her. Fizz blew air he gets from his amphibious ability. This was a lot for Emer later, probably never had that closeness with anyone before.
The party did come across a large toad statue, for an evil skum god that demands living sacrifices. The chamber was otherwise featureless. Lia did come close to the statue, to examine it (Siberius FAR behind) the ground for an instance became slick, but the effect went away. The group decides to stay away from this thing. It is too strange.
The 20 other people gather at the temple of Tempus, during this time of rest, Ogdar shares with Fizz he does not trust Emer, taking us down here and still won't tell why she needs them. It is during this time the party gets ambushed by skum. They try the doors, which were barred, so they came through the tinted windows! In the chaos Lia unleashed wild magic, Ogdar was pushed aside by the panicking prisoners. Fizz lead the people out! Siberius fighting with rapier and halberd in hands. The skum came in as waves. Sadly 5 people were lost to the ambush...

The party returns to the toad statue, Lia's curiosity got the best of her. The party examines the statue, Lia touches the stonework and the trap triggers again. The floor is slick, and the toad mouth opens and she slips in. Lia finds herself in a pit of rotting corpses, probably other sacrifices, however one was still alive. A weathered old wizard named Toby was found. And with him the party discover a forgotten spell from ancient days past.
From the prisoners, a sneaky tabaxi reveals himself to the group, and strikes a deal with a contract. Together they encounter something from the water, a large mutation of a creature! The tabaxi ran for help, as Fizz stood firm as best as he could until he too had to step away, Emer proved to be tough, as she threw lethal kicks and blows! But it was the tabaxi who stole the kill. Indeed after running far away from it, he returns to deliver a knife in the head. The tabaxi's victory was short lived, for when the party come across an underground canyon, with a very unstable zig-zagged pathway down, the tabaxi lost his footing and fell to his death. However, from his backpack, a goblin came out! The goblin introduced himself as Gimme, a rogue and thief.
Water ankle deep, but the way out was near. Before the party was a massive chamber, at least 510 feet wide! It was here the skum and the sahuagin had their final confrontation! The group takes the people out the caves by sneaking around the walls, Emer dashed through the fray to clear the way out. The party dodge spears and arrows, and bump into smaller battles along the way, passing through the enemy. The party dodge, skip over the dead, and block incoming strikes as they escape the tunnels under the ocean.
Now above ground, the party camps, Fizz and Ogdar now demanding Emer explains herself. Around the campfire, Emer tells of the troubles of giants and dragons in the North. Many innocents are dying to their conflict. She says she envisioned something of a possible future. A king, a forgotten king from ancient days past, before the Time of Troubles, possibly before mankind settled on the Sword Coast. The Forgotten King ruled the North, but he had an enemy, a priestess of Auril. In a desperate battle, the priestess killed the king, and raised him as her servant. The king however, had great willpower. He managed to break free of her control and defeat her. The king was withering as he fought, so he retired his kingdom, built his own crypt, and put himself to rest. he scattered his artifacts across the coast, and spake that if ever the world needed him again, return the artifacts to his tomb. Emer says in a dream she sees them.. the heroes, taking the artifacts. She asks that the party to fulfills the prophecy she has seen. And with the help of the King to return peace to the Spine of the World.

Emer tells that in her strange visions the mace was located in a place called the Vale of Shadows, a burial place carved into a canyon deep in the mountains. It is cursed, it is said the Vale moves in a mist and does not often appear the same place twice. Tracking will be difficult. But it is a first step to re-awakening the King.
Being free meant more options for the heroes to make. But everyone was in agreement that the refugees need to be somewhere safe. Lia suggested to venture south, back to Featherfields, perhaps even see if there are survivors. The goliath Ogdar told the group if they need shelter in the mountain, Thunder Keep may be a good option. However it was settled to go to Bryn Shander, one of the Ten Towns in Icewind Dale.
The road was dangerous. Less then two days into the journey and the party started to feel the chill of the wind. Siberius for sure came close to getting sick from the freezing cold, but he shivered on. On the third day, the party comes across a quickly made wooden wall, made right on the road in between to cliff faces. An armored hobgoblin demanded gold for safe passage. The wall had archers at the ready. The party gave him the gold but found out that the "archers" were dummies, made to look like soldiers from afar. After through the gate, Fizz turned and demanded that the goblinoid return some money. The hobgoblin was strict on his deal. So the party challenged him, but he was tough, bringing Ogdar down with his sword, he turns to kill the rest of the party, but Ogdar's sword found a place in his shoulder, this bought enough time for Lia to unleash fire on him!
Another robbery attempt happened on the journey. A bandit named Absolom and his crew mistook the group for his rival, Redwolf. The paladins made him turn his head to the prisoners, that they are not bandits, but refugees. The bandit chief let the people go.
AT last after a week of travel, Bryn Shanders was ahead, and with it hot soup, resupply, and rest!

The party supply themselves for a long journey into the Spine of the World to search for the Vale of Shadows, where Emer expects the mace of the forgotten king to be. The party go about camp, looking for a map or a guide. They do encounter the stalker ranger-like character at the bar. They previously encountered this strange man observing Lia's wings. The man is secluded, as cold as the winter here in the northlands. He warned Lia to not venture out in the mountains, and they would not survive without him, but his price was too high. Lia deemed wise to venture out and seek the Vale on their own, with the help of maps they purchased.
Bad omens followed the party's footsteps. The way to the mountain was an uphill battle against the steep rocks and the constant winds. The party find a pass through the rocks, where the snow drifts slowly, and the wind does not follow. Ogdar and Siberius on alert, the pass was ideal for an ambush. The sounds of battle was ahead! When the party came closer, before them in a clearing, dwarves battled an orc warband, and the dwarves was loosing. Blood stained the snow in this clearing, as orcs maimed dwarf after dwarf. Ogdar cried out that these dwarves were companions of Thunder Keep, and in a deep cry charged out to the dwarf's aid. Siberius cried out to the dwarves to fall back into the pass, it appeared the dwarves were in retreat but the orcs were aggressive in their tactics. The party grabbed the attention of the warchief, who came to attack Ogdar. The dual was aggressive, their blades sparked as their metals grind against their strength, nearly breaking the swords. Siberius and Lia, hold their ground as orcs flooded to them. Archers were high on the rocks, shooting at Lia, but she used her uncontrolled magic to bring the archers down! Siberius parried the orcs, blade in one hand, spell in the other! Orc shamans brought a storm that destroyed the pass! Ogdar was struck down by the chief, bleeding out. Emer came out from hiding and helped Ogdar get up. Just in time too as the chief challenged the spellsword knight. Ogdar bellowed out to the orc, and the chief was surprised to see the goliath up again. The orc was killed in a deadly battle. The shamans were chased down and were stopped before bringing a lethal blizzard. In the last moment, the stranger from Bryn Shanders and the barbarians the party previously found in the wilderness came to their rescue. Alas, the monk Emer was killed... a moment of sadness and mourning followed. Lia suggests to return back to raise Emer back. Siberius recovers the dwarf leader's helm and axe so he might return it to their clan. Ogdar recognized the dwarf as Balador, a good friend of Thunder Keep....

Post Winter's Crown, Chapter VIII, Hermit Reply with quote
With the death of Emer, the party was left without a guide to Fate's vision, Lia and Ogdar take her up from the bloody field, and do not hesitate to head back to Bryn Shanders, there was a temple there to the Watchful One, Helm. During the way back, Lia asks the stranger questions, who is he, and why save them. The stranger introduces himself as Ekroan, someone with a past. As far as why to come to their rescue, Ekroan said he knew they wouldn't survive. Ekroan and the barbarians soon disappeared into the snowfall.
The town welcomed the heroes back, and the party made haste to the temple of Helm. Inside the inner sanctum, they laid Emer before the priest. The cleric told the party that the process to bring someone back to life is no small miracle. He need 1000 gold for supplies for the prayer. He also said that Helm's mercy can only be given to someone dead no longer than 10 days. The two party members at the time, Meep (10 year old monk) and Gemme (goblin mime) really didn't see any reason to worry about Emer. They don't care of her death so much as the rest. However the sound of adventure in the Vale sounds good enough. The party agrees to head to the Vale, and find the artifact, maybe even find enough coin.
During their journey, the party climb steep rocks and endure freezing winds. The way was mostly safe, until the group encounter a wandering cyclops that attacked the party for "meat". It was here we learn that Lia's magic is dangerous. Her magic drained all life around her, and made permanent changes to her body, she is now taller than the goliath paladin.
3 days are past, as the party find a lonely house in the mountains. Meep, always ahead of the party darts for the house. Ogdar calling out for him/her to come back, and now the goblin is gone! The party now carefully enters the house. Herbs, supplies and rope are found, as well as food and a magic bag of beans. However the owner returns. An old man, a hermit by the looks of him. He demanded the party returns everything they took. Lia and Ogdar agreed, thinking the house abandoned. Gemme snuck away with his stolen goods.
The chapter ends, after now 5 days of travel, the Vale is before them. The canyon has many tombs carved into both faces of the rocks, it's dark crypts corrupted by a curse. As the party delved into the first tomb they pass, Gemme.. the goblin, failed to find a trap that took his life gruesomely. The Vale of Shadows is a very dangerous place, and the party now knows to be on guard.

Post Winter's Crown, CHapter IX, Vale Reply with quote
During their travel to the Vale of Shadows, the party do manage to find Ekroan and his band of barbarian companions, camped somewhere near the destination site. The rather brooding stranger Ekroan warns the party, particular Lia, to do not enter the Vale. It is cursed. At this time, Ogdar and Siberius grow sick of this man, thinking him a coward. However, there is strength in numbers, and after exchanging each others tales, the barbarian found reason to join them to the Vale, if it means to stop the giant. Ekroan tried to get some money out of the deal, but was greatly outvoted even by his barbarians.
The deep canyon before the party is a massive network of dungeons and crypts to an army long ago. The winds seem to find it's way here, and with it the echo of many dangers of the mountains. The party now embark on finding the mace artifact Emer told them about. Each tomb is guarded by the cursed dead, skeletons animate to life at the presence of the living entering the ancient burial ground. Light skirmishes between the party and the skeletons took place, as well as some lethal battles as well. One such battle took place in a crypt to a cleric of Myrkul, skeletons hissed loudly at the party, cutting down some of the barbarian friends. Lia's magic went from powerful to deadly quick! The tomb was encased in fire, her skin turned blue permanently, and many of the companions injured and the barbarians killed. She was very sorry, and is advised by Siberius who works with magic as well to use caution.
A new stranger is found in these tombs. An elven rogue, wearing dark leathers, she appeared to be searching for treasure in the tombs. Ogdar demands she identifies herself, and the woman is taken back by an action. Siberius puts his charms on and introduces himself and the party, then the woman introduced herself as Penembra. She has now distasteful feelings for Ogdar, but Ogdar tried to explain that in a Vale such as this, to be better safe than sorry, Penembra does not listen. Rather she is very high of herself and seeks her fame and fortune by treasure hunting.
After spending many hours in this canyon the party finds themselves cursed! The Vale's influence has reached to Siberius and Fizz. It was time to retreat. They believe they have enough treasure to bring Emer back, and maybe more to remove these curses. On the way back to Bryn Shanders, a frost giant guards the shortcut back, speaking in giant tongue to Lia who knows the language. She traded for their passage, but not for Ekroan and his companion, they were left with the giant, and an unsure fate... The party do not seem concerned at all for the barbarian and Ekroan's well being. Siberius has now fallen almost deathly ill, Ogdar lends the knight his support through the blizzards, Fizz is ready to keep moving to safe Emer, and as for Penembra... she counts her prizes carefully.
